2012 Elementary/Primary Team Championships

Hey chess fans! My Chess Addiction traveled to the Elementary team championships up in East Lansing on 2/4. The tournament was held at the student union on the Michigan State University campus. It was incredible how many teams were present to participate in the event. I have no idea what the official number of kids were, but I wouldnt be surprised if it was somewhere between 400-600 kids.

A few of the kids that stopped by the booth had some games they were particularly proud of. Here is a game that was played by Rithvik Pennepalli. He had the black pieces in this game.

Michigan Chess Festival

Hey My Chess Addiction Fans! My chess addiction traveled to the Michigan Chess Festival Oct 28-30th. Great tournament put on by Alan Kaufman. A lot of GM's and IM's from all over the world. It was really a treat to watch their games live and in person. Here is an article below that was recently published on www.chess.com by International Master John Bartholomew. John competed in the Michigan Chess Festival and ended with a score of 4/5 (+3/=2) Or 3 wins and 2 draws for the layperson!

Interview with Alan Kaufman (founder and CEO of Michigan Chess Festival LLC)

Is this your first time organizing such a large scale tournament? And what prompted you to do this?

Round 1 Draw at Bottom Half Class Championships

Brandon O’Neil (1628)
Matthew Trujillo (1817)

1. e4 c5
2. Nf3 g6
3. d4 Bg7
4. Be3 Nf6
5. Nc3 cxd4
6. Nxd4 Nc6
7. Nxc6 bxc6

After this move I felt pretty good about my game. The pawn on c6 helps me consolidate the d5 square and can later aid me in a central pawn push with d7-d5. Also I feel that the Bishop on g7 coordinates really well with a rook on b8 when I have a semi open b file.

8. Bc4 Nxe4?!

Round 5 of the Bottom Half Class Championships

This was my final game of the bottom half class championships. It was against Ian Edgerle who ended up taking clear first in our section. I had the black pieces

1. e4 c5
2. Nf3 g6
3. g3 Bg7
4. Bg2 Nc6
5. 0-0 Nf6
6. Re1 d6

My recent experience at the Michigan Open

Chess Addiction traveled to the Michigan Open in September 2010. The event was held in Lansing, Michigan and consisted of an Open, Reserve, and Booster section. In all there were 130 players that participated this year. I decided to play in the Open section; although with my 1775 pre-tournament rating I could have qualified to play in the Reserve section, which was for under 1800 rated players. I had been practicing quite a bit prior to the tournament, and felt up to the task of strong competition so I elected to play in the Open section.
